Established in 1999, ColdStar Solutions delivers fresh and frozen food to Lower Mainland, British Columbia, and to Vancouver Island. Acting on its commitment to operational excellence and community responsibility, ColdStar recently purchased 10 CNG Class 8 tractors powered by the Cummins Westport ISX-12 G engine. In doing so, they became the first fleet in Canada to operate CNG highway tractors. ColdStar estimates that their new fleet of CNG trucks will reduce diesel consumption by about 100,000 gallons per year and greenhouse gas emissions by over 360 tons annually, the equivalent to removing about 75 passenger vehicles off the road.
ColdStar partnered with local gas distribution company, FortisBC, who provided incentive funding that covered 75 percent of the cost differential to make the switch to CNG. By having the initial financial outlay reduced, ColdStar anticipates a payback on their initial investment within the first year of operation.
The company is currently realizing 30 percent fuel savings and anticipates an additional 10 percent once an approved province-wide price amalgamation from FortisBC comes into effect. With CNG infrastructure commitments from the utility, ColdStar – with just a few months of NGV experience under their belt – has decided to expand their CNG fleet, adding 13 new tractors.
