Dr. Mostafa Kamel has been involved with engine performance and product development at Cummins and Cummins Westport Industries (CWI) for over 32 years. He began developing heavy duty natural gas engines at Cummins in 1990 and became the Director of Product Development for Cummins Westport when the joint venture was formed in 2001. Since the beginning of CWI , Mostafa has had leadership responsibility for product development of automotive alternative fuels engines, which encompasses the design and development of every spark-ignited natural gas engine Cummins Westport has offered, from the B, C, and L series engines featuring lean-burn technology, to the ISL-G and ISX-12 G, using stoichiometric cooled EGR technology.
Since his first days at CWI, Mostafa has been dedicated to developing natural gas engines that provide the reliability and performance customers expect, and that meet or exceed worldwide emission regulations. With his engineering staff and colleagues at CWI and Cummins, and with partners and OEMs, Mostafa has led the development and launch of more than ten natural gas engine products for North American and International markets. The ISL-G has been the most successful heavy duty natural gas engine ever produced with over 20,000 engines delivered to date, and, today, there are more than 35,000 Cummins Westport natural gas engines in service worldwide in a variety of applications from transit and school bus, refuse truck, shuttle, sweeper, and medium and heavy-duty truck applications.
The NGV industry recognizes Dr. Kamel as the “Father of Natural Gas Engines” because of his contributions and dedication to the development and success of natural gas engines for the medium and heavy-duty on road vehicle market.
