CSA Group Releases a Revised Code for the Installation of NGV Refueling Stations

CSA Group has published a new edition of the Canadian B108 Code to support the safe installation of natural gas vehicle refueling stations. This fourth edition, known as CSA B108-18, includes revisions to the Code’s existing CNG coverage, as well as a new section (Part 2) dedicated to the design, location, construction, operation, operator training and maintenance of LNG refueling stations.

B108 is the Code in Canada, required by many provinces, to install natural gas refueling stations for vehicles, and is aimed at suppliers, installers and owner operators involved in supplying natural gas refueling stations. First released in 1995, and revised again in 1999 and 2014, B108 is designed to support the country’s alternative fuel deployment initiatives, along with its objectives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with transportation. The 2018 revision addresses difficulties with interpretation of the Code, as well as advances in the evolving technology.

“This new edition addresses a number of design and interpretation issues that have arisen over the past several years, and the addition of Part 2, covering LNG vehicle refueling, is a logical and exciting development that will help to harmonize best practices, as well as end-user experience,” said Ry Smith, Chair of the CSA B108 Technical Subcommittee.

Smith adds that CSA B108 will continue to evolve as more CNG stations are built, and as the Code is used by new designers, within new jurisdictions.

In addition to B108-18, the organization recently published 18 new standards to support the safe deployment of LNG vehicles, including standards covering LNG vehicle fuel system components, as well as vehicle dispensing systems.
